“You have officially joined us in the Spider-Verse!” said esteemed conductor Shelbie Rassler as she entered the stage of the Emerson Colonial Theater. On September 21, Rassler’s orchestra was able to immerse their audience into a captivating experience by making them feel as though they were part of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Live In Concert” consists of a screening of the movie while the orchestra simultaneously plays the majority of the soundtrack in front of you. There is a full orchestra and electronic turntables, so the musicians can recreate all of the film’s moments where there are record-scratch noises.

When the orchestra started to play, an intense vibration coursed through the ground and sent chills through the viewer’s body. It fully immersed the audience in the brilliance of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

When a movie’s soundtrack is performed by a live orchestra with an electronic turntable, it completely transforms the experience. It puts all normal viewings of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” to shame. This live concert experience has a way of completely captivating the audience, especially when the crowd cheers as the movie gets exciting. It makes one feel as though they are a part of something so phenomenal.

It is encouraged throughout the viewing for the audience to applaud or scream at their favorite parts of the film. The crowd took this very seriously. There were certain times when the whole theater would burst into laughter, screams, or cheers. It was brilliant. Many times, when Spider-Man 2099, also known as Miguel O’Hara, appeared on the screen, there would be especially intense applause and screaming simply for his presence in the scene. The same intensity was exhibited for all of the other character cameos that appear in the movie as well.

The whole audience got into the experience; even when the most minor events would happen, there would be someone screaming or applauding. The experience was so different from any average viewing of a movie. At normal theaters, there are occasional laughs shared with a crowd, but with this crowd, everyone was on the same wavelength and were all so excited to be present.

Overall, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Live In Concert” will be truly hard to forget. It completely immerses the audience in the viewing experience while also managing to bless our ears with the soundtrack’s beautiful orchestral sound. The musicians added another layer of depth to the movie that could never have been thought of before. When hearing a live orchestra play the soundtrack, it sends goosebumps all through the body, because this is something that doesn’t happen very often. If given the chance, definitely go to future events like this live concert and fully immerse yourself in the experience. There is nothing like feeling as though you are in the Spider-Verse in real-time.
